Walleye Fishing

8 February 2010 No Comment

Walleye are one of the most popular types of fresh water fish, although, they might not be the most exciting to catch. They are definitely not known for their fighting ability, however, bigger walleye can put up a decent fight. Walleye aren’t going to take the long runs that northern pike will and they aren’t going to leap out of the water.

Walleye can be found most anywhere in the river, but a good place to start is on or around sunken islands, generally in the twelve to twenty foot depth range. Fishing the interior rivers is best in only one location — the deepest pool in a river reach that you can find. Walleye congregate in these holes as the water cools. Look for deep pools on outside river bends just off cut-banks where the current has scoured the bed of the stream. If there are rocks, logs or other structure present — so much the better. A large chub baited slip-sinker rig, leadhead — preferably dark in color and tipped with a minnow — or a deep running plug are best for catching walleye in these waters.

Walleye fishing can be a frustrating experience IF you expect to catch your limit (or even one fish) on every trip. The sometimes elusive fish seems to be affected by many factors, including but not limited to such things as barometric pressure, water fluctuations, wind and current.

Some of the popular vacation destinations for catching walleye.

Lake of the Woods – Minnesota and Canada – This lake is loaded with walleye and you can catch pike, smallmouth bass and muskie as well.

Lake Erie – This lake is arguably the best lake in the world for walleye fishing. On a charter, you can catch tons of walleye. Check out Port Clinton, Ohio for some of the best walleye fishing on Lake Erie.

Detroit River – Walleye travel from Lake Erie into the Detroit River to spawn. Many tournaments are held here early in the year. If you fish during the spawn, it will be cold, but the Detroit River might give you the best chances of anywhere to catch a 10 pound walleye.
